Differences Between Baby Laundry and Adult Laundry
Differences Between Baby Laundry and Adult Laundry
Doing laundry can be one of the most tedious house-chores, especially when you have a newborn! Not only is an infant's skin more sensitive and delicate, but their unpredictable spit-ups and accidents can mean washing more often than normal. Onesies, blankets, socks, mittens, burping rags-there are countless fabrics your baby uses every day! But do they need special care, or can you just throw it in the wash with everything else?
Does It Matter?
The most common way for babies to come in contact with germs is through their clothes! Especially when the clothes are brand new, it's important to be sure the clothes have been properly sanitized, to protect the baby's developing immune system. While it might be easier to throw it in with the rest of the household's dirty laundry, it is much safer to separate the baby's clothes to ensure there will be no contamination from other articles of clothing. We've decided to share some of our best tips to make sure you baby laundry is sanitized and ready for your child!
Washing Tips
First, before the first wear, it's important to make sure all bacteria carried in from the store has been killed. Here are a few steps you might consider:
- Read the tags for each fabric, to make sure you know the correct way to wash the article of clothing
- If permissible, pre-soak the laundry in hot water
- Use a scent-free, chemical-free detergent, or use a special baby-detergent
- Soak the washed-clothing in warm water after the cycle has finished, to be sure any detergent residue or possible allergens are removed
Once the washing is finished, it's on to the drying process!
Drying Tips
While it may be tempting to throw the wet clothes in the dryer and call it a day, take a moment to read these suggestions:
- If using a drying machine, check the tags to be sure the clothing won't shrink!
- Make sure the lint has been thoroughly cleaned, to avoid any allergens or bacteria
- If air-drying inside, choose a sanitary room with lots of natural sunlight, and if possible, hang-dry rather than laying the clothing on a surface
- If air-drying outside, choose an area with direct sunlight, and avoid areas with lots of dust or dirt that might force you to wash again
