Choosing the Right Detergent & Fabric Softener
Choosing the Right Detergent & Fabric Softener
Trying to decide which detergent to choose while standing in an aisle surrounded by dozens of choices can be an unpleasant experience. From brands to scents, to slogans claiming unique abilities, it's hard to know what detergent is actually able to do, and throwing fabric softener into the mix makes it even more complicated. We've decided to make it easy for you- read below to find out what you need to know.
What Your Detergent Should Do For You
Why don't we just use water to wash out clothes? Great questions! No, it's not just because we want to infuse our clothing with a particular scent, it's because detergent acts as a binding agent between water and clothing. In other words, it literally pulls the dirt, grime, grease, food particles, and other substances from our clothes, and the water carries it away. This is why some people have allergic reactions to certain kinds of detergents: some brands use chemicals that are more harsh, scents that contain irritating oils, or a number of other ingredients. That's why it's important to pay attention to the detergent you use, to make sure you get the best results possible!
Speaking of the best results, here is a short list of what detergents to consider for certain fabrics:
Detergent?
- As stated above, detergent contains chemicals and enzymes
- Great for grease stains, food stains, and removing allergens!
- Can use chemicals/scents that cause allergic reactions
- Many of these chemicals are bad for the environment (NJ Laundry Service uses Eco-friendly products, click here to find out about our process!)
Bleach?
We want your whites to stay white, but here's what you should know:
- Most store-brand bleaches will lead to yellowing and weakening of fabric
- Can be toxic in combination with certain detergents, and prevent detergents from doing their job
- Does not remove certain stains (like rust!)
- Cannot be used on silks, woolens, or synthetic fabrics
Soaps?
- Soaps do not contain enzymes
- Can be used safely with wool fabrics and silks
Fabric Softener?
- Does not "clean" in the same way a detergent does
- Adds a protective, smoothing coating to the fabric, making is soft and gentle on the skin
- Prevents static and reduces absorbency (so use sparingly with towels)
- Use for cotton and linens ONLY
