Caring for Your Leather Clothing
Caring for Your Leather Clothing
Who doesn't love a beautiful leather piece in their wardrobe? Leather is classy and durable and is definitely a must-have. Leather also needs special care so that it can be enjoyed for years to come. For your more valuable leather pieces, you may want to take them to a professional for quality cleaning periodically. In between professional cleanings and for your less expensive items, be sure to consider these tips.
Standard Care
- Leather can accumulate oils and grease during regular wear. Wipe down your jackets and handbags with a clean and dry, or slightly damp, cloth at the end of the day.
- Allow your leather to air out to get rid of any unwanted odors.
- Watch out for overfilling your wallets and handbags because leather can stretch over time. Be sure to use sturdy hangers when hanging up your leather jackets.
- Watch out for your jewelry so that it does not get caught on your leather to prevent scratches. Also, be careful where you place your pieces for the same reason.
Cleaning Your Leather
- Remove stains as quickly as possible. Water stains just need to be blotted and allowed to air dry. Don't use heat. Use rubbing alcohol for ink stains. For oil-based stains, cover the stain with cornstarch and allow to sit for a couple of hours. Remove the cornstarch with a toothbrush and clean cloth.
- Find a cleaner specifically for leather goods. Follow the instructions on the cleaner as well as on the leather piece for proper cleaning steps. Be sure to test the cleaner in an inconspicuous spot in order to prevent significant damage.
- Avoid any chemical cleaners and conditioners.
Storing Leather
- Store all your leather pieces in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight.
- Avoid hanging handbags by their strap because they can become misshapen over time.
- For items you won't be using for a longer period of time, store in a proper dust bag or pillowcase made with natural fibers.
- Open buckles and snaps in order to avoid impressions.
- Fill with acid-free tissue paper to keep the proper shape.
